The Curiosity Approach

The Curiosity Approach – A modern-day teaching philosophy fueled by a passion for play, a love of nature, and an understanding that the child is the true curriculum. An approach that inspires awe and wonder in all those who engage with it.

The Curiosity Approach was founded by Lyndsey Hellyn and Stephanie Bennett, long-serving teachers, and nursery leaders who created this beautiful practice based on the work of multiple early years pioneers, such as Maria Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Rudolf Steiner, and Emmi Pikler.

The core teaching of The Curiosity Approach is the significance and benefit of moving away from over-stimulating technology and plastic toys, and instead focusing on the wonders of the natural world and authentic, open-ended resources. A toy car will always only ever be a toy car, but a stick however – with a dash of imagination, this seemingly mundane stick can be transformed into a magic wand, a microphone, or a witches broom!

Through adopting this child-led and play-based approach, children are recognized as capable beyond measure and become the “pilots of their own play” – the centre of their own development.

In 2020, we began the 12-month-long journey towards becoming the first Curiosity Approach Accredited setting in Dubai… and oh, what a wonderful adventure it was. A voyage into curiosity, into the wonder of simplicity and the vast stretches of the imagination.

In each classroom, we have Curiosity Corners brimming with awe-inspiring trinkets, mark-making stations filled with art materials, and cosy areas that are perfect for a cuddle and a good book between all the daily nursery excitement. Our passionate teachers set up activities based on the children’s current interests and use ‘in-the-moment’ planning to create meaningful invitations to play and learn.

We aim to nurture the “thinkers and doers” of the future and facilitate a lifelong love of learning. The natural world makes its way into every aspect of our nursery, and through adopting The Curiosity Approach we were able to further expand our love of nature and our passion to protect it into everything we do. We inspire awe and wonder in our little Kangaroo’s through bug hunts, cloud spotting, gardening and spending time with our rather interesting nursery pets, Lucky the Giant African Spurred Tortoise, and our Giant African Snails.

We embrace controlled risk, love to climb trees and thrive on fun and creativity. We recognize the wonder that is found in simplest of things, and aim to empower the children in our care to be the best little humans that they can possibly be.
